COVID-19, Anosmia, Clever Canines and The Niche Fragrance Community

Of the five senses, the sense of smell has been the least developed and trained in most cultures. And yet fragrance is one of the most powerful senses! The olfactory bulb that recognizes scent is part of the limbic system which also handles memory, mood, emotion and behavior. Our sense of smell can alert us to the danger of a house on fire, it can warn us to avoid walking in what the dog left behind, and more pleasantly, it can stir up nostalgic moments that waft over us when certain scents are present in the air. The sense of smell is on the radar of the world now due to the current pandemic. While pharmaceutical companies are racing to discover a vaccine against COVID-19, anosmia, the loss of smell, has been linked to the virus. In fact, now more than 17 countries, including the UK and the US, recognize smell loss as a possible indicator, even when other symptoms are not present. Several niche fragrance community members are actively involved in projects related to the loss of the sense of smell and the COVID-19 virus. Here are their stories.

GCCR Urges People With Respiratory Illness (COVID-19, Cold, Flu) to Participate in Global Survey on Smell or Taste Loss

Chemist and perfumer Christophe Laudamiel was, in March 2020, one of the founders of Global Chemosensory Researchers (GCCR), a body that gathers more than 400 scientists from 52 different countries, born with the aim to further the scientific knowledge around COVID19, the virus that has shaken the entire world’s population.

From the moment ageusia and anosmia have been officially recognised as symptoms of this virus or symptoms of other respiratory problems, the GCCR has created a survey (translated in 24 languages) with the hope to reach anyone who’s had or who suspects they might have had COVID19 or that simply suffered from loss of smell and taste in the past few months. All the collected data is expected to be extremely helpful in the near future in order to gain a better understanding of the virus, with the aim to find a vaccine.

APG's Airless Packaging for the Natural Beauty Boom

A growing number of marketing campaigns that highlight the potential risks of beauty product heavily dependent on chemical agents, generated a growth in the demand of completely natural products, which consequently called for a packaging innovation. In fact the lack of various chemical elements means that the product will be visually (with change of color, phase separation, bad smell) subject to external agents like bacteria, UV rays and air. APG Packaging has stepped up to the challenge by developing a new packaging line for sierum and creams based on airless pumps that will improve by 15% a natural product life thanks to the use of an innovative non-pressurized chamber.

EU Circular Economy Action Plan for Sustainability

The European Commission has recently adopted a new Circular Economy Action Plan in order to secure a clear and strongly competitive market for Europe whilst maintaining high the focus on taking care of the environment and allowing new rights to the consumers.

Various actions are being implemented such as: making sure the production of sustainable products becomes a standard for the European market, creating products that are built to last longer, that are easy to be reused, recycled or repaired, and, whenever possible, made with recycled materials as opposed to raw materials; to guarantee more information and details about the product in order for the consumer to make a more informed and sustainable choice.

Making scent at the Alchemist Atelier

For the past few years, there has been a growing demand from consumers who want to find a way to customize or personalize their fragrance. Not wanting to wear the same scent as their friends or peers, people are seeking a way of turning scent into something that is truly their own. Several new brand boutiques offer programs that accompany the consumer through the scent creation process. I recently booked a workshop at the Alchemist Atelier on Rue Etienne-Marcel in the heart of Paris. Here’s a brand that is disrupting the fragrance landscape not only with their educational workshops but also with the Scent Creator device which allows the user to create bespoke fragrance in the luxury of his own home. Read on for an account of my experience and my interview with the brand.
