Fragrance at Your Fingertips: A Book Review of The Perfume Companion: The Definitive Guide To Choosing Your Next Scent

Call me old school but I get a distinct pleasure from holding a book as opposed to looking at a screen. I like to turn the pages rather than scroll around, and I might even highlight the important passages out of truly old school habits. It’s why, perfumista that I am, I had to get myself a copy of The Perfume Companion: The Definitive Guide To Choosing Your Next Scent. This hefty tome, co-authored by artisan perfumer and writer Sarah McCartney – the nose behind 4160 Tuesdays - and perfume journalist and blogger Samantha Scriven, is more than a guide: it’s a reference book that provides a brief history on the origins of fragrance, how-to’s for selecting and wearing a fragrance plus easy-to-understand information on composition and ingredients. And that’s all in addition to the commentary on nearly 500 fragrances. Shall we turn the page and take a closer look?

If you’ve left your holiday gift shopping to the last minute and there’s a perfumista on your list, this book will make the perfect present!

Rihanna’s Fenty Perfume Is Now Available at Sephora — But Only for a Limited Time

Fenty Eau de Parfum, the sweet and spicy fragrance from Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, will be available in Sephora stores and online for a limited holiday period ending December 27. Rihanna worked alongside LVMH master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud, to create a "sensual warm floral experience". “I wanted a rich color that really represented all genders from all walks of life,” she continued. “Brown is my favorite color. Brown is what they are. Brown is where I come from. If I'm going to create a fragrance that represents me, the body language of the bottle has to espouse it too. So I wanted something brown, but also clear so you can see the liquid and fragrance you are about to experience.”

Lorenzo Villoresi, a Living Treasure

How can I describe the nervousness that overtook me as I arrived at the Lorenzo Villoresi offices in Florence. I was about to interview the master, a formidable man recognized for his luxurious eponymous fragrance and lifestyle brand as well as his efforts to sustain and promote Italian excellence in artistic craftsmanship. Lorenzo Villoresi is a true Renaissance man who has knowledge in a broad range of subjects and skills in the fields of art, science, invention and writing. In fact, he was just awarded the title of Maestro d’Arte e Mestiere for Artistic Perfumery by the Cologni Foundation for the Métiers d’Art, and he joins the Libro d’Oro dell’eccellenza artigiana, which shines a light on the creators and artisans of Italy to recognize them as “Living Treasures” who promote the art and heritage of their country.

It is also interesting to note that 22% of women, but only 11% of men, rate their sense of smell as "excellent".
