IFRA U.K. Presents Sense of Smell Survey Results

The International Fragrance Association U.K. (IFRA U.K.) conducted a recent survey to take an in-depth look at the UK sense of smell and its value. The survey revealed that for 60% of UK adults, the main feeling evoked by their sense of smell is nostalgia. When asked about the smells of childhood that smell brings back to mind, answers included "freshly mown grass", "baking sweets", "smell of rain", "melting asphalt", "Sunday roast" and even " school lunches ". Barry C. Smith, director of the Institute of Philosophy at the Center for the Study of the Senses and chair of IFRA U.K.'s Fragrance Forum 2022, said: "We take an average of about 20,000 breaths a day, each of which informs us about our surroundings. The olfactory receptors in the nose connect us directly to the areas of the brain that create memories. This is why our sense of smell is so important for our well-being and for feeling connected."

Sony develops machine to measure sense of smell

Sony has developed a device to measure an individual's sense of smell. The company hopes it will eventually be used in hospitals as olfactory measurement could help in the early diagnosis of dementia. Fujita Shuji, who leads the promotion of olfactory activities at Sony, says he wants to make smells easier to manage by mechanizing their measurement and reducing the burden on examiners. He believes that because the new equipment makes olfactory measurement easier, it could be used more extensively, including for health checks.
